Can you use a stage 1 baby formula after six months of age?
It is completely safe for your baby to continue on a2 Platinum® infant formula (Stage 1) beyond 6 months, as your baby is starting on solids. Introducing solid foods provides additional nutrients which will help meet your baby’s nutritional requirements.
If your baby is already settled on a2 Platinum® infant formula (Stage 1), remaining on this may be more beneficial than transitioning to a2 Platinum® follow-on formula (Stage 2), as there are many changes occurring with the introduction of solids, and this can be one aspect that remains the same, allowing you to focus on progressing with introducing a range of solids foods, in particular iron rich foods.
If you find your baby is showing little interest in solid foods, it may be more beneficial to introduce a2 Platinum® follow-on formula (Stage 2).
How long does a2 Platinum® infant formula last once opened?
Once a can of a2 Platinum® infant formula has been opened, it can be kept safely for four weeks if stored in a cool dry place. Discard any unused formula after four weeks.
To maximise the shelf life:
- Keep the scoop in the lid when not in use. There is no need to wash the scoop after preparing a bottle.
- If the scoop gets wet accidentally, you will need to wash and dry it thoroughly before putting it back in the can.
- Always keep a2 Platinum® infant formula in its original can and cover with the plastic lid to prevent contamination of the powder.
- Do not transfer the powder to another container because this is a high risk of contamination.

How much a2 Platinum® infant formula? How often?
The Feeding Guide provided on each can of a2 Platinum® formula, is there to guide you on how much and how often to feed your baby. Different mixing ratios and scoops may be used for other infant formula products, so it is important to specifically follow the instructions on the can when preparing a2 Platinum® Infant Formula.
There is much individuality in how much each baby will drink and variation in the amount that the same baby will drink from day to day. The Feeding Guide is a guide to how much babies of different ages will need to drink and the frequency of consumption. It is important to always be guided by your baby and allow your baby to drink to satiation point, even if this means discarding any unused formula in the bottle. Unlike breastmilk which changes composition as baby grows, infant formula concentration remains constant so it is only the volume consumed which changes as the baby grows.
It is important to prepare the infant formula with the right amount of powder and water, as per the instructions provided on the can. This will help ensure your baby’s nutritional requirements are being met. If you add too much powder to your baby’s bottle your baby’s feed will be too concentrated. This can lead to constipation, causing your baby abdominal pain, bloating and discomfort when trying to do a poo. If you add too much water, your baby’s feeds will be too diluted and they will not receive enough nutrition to help them grow well.
Do not prepare formula with a different concentration to that which is prescribed on the can, unless under the specific guidance and instruction of a qualified healthcare professional such as your GP or paediatrician.
Guidelines aside, around 6 wet nappies daily, as well as a developmentally growing and thriving infant indicate that your baby is likely to be receiving enough infant products.
Why have you updated the a2 Platinum® range?
At The a2 Milk Company, we are committed to continuously improving our products to support the nutritional needs of formula-fed infants and young children. As part of this commitment, we have updated the a2 Platinum® range with an updated formulation and refreshed packaging.
How do I transition to the updated a2 Platinum® formulation?
If your baby is sensitive to changes in feeding, we recommend gradually introducing the updated a2 Platinum® formula. For more information reach out to our a2™ Careline, staffed by Accredited Practising Dietitians on 1800 22 46 32 or contact us here.
When moving to the updated a2 Platinum® range, it’s important to note that the feeding guide has been updated and the scoop to water ratio is now 2 scoops to 50mL of water. This change ensures your baby continues to receive the nutrition intended for their age when the formula is prepared according to the updated feeding guide. To support a smooth transition, always use the scoop provided in the current can and follow the feeding guide and directions for use printed on the can.
What are the updates to the packaging?
Our updated a2 Platinum® range now features a premium straight-wall tin, updated artwork and now includes the scoop in the lid for convenience. Additionally, our 800g can now features 3 QR code traceability. You will find QR code on the base of the can, on top of the foil and on the underside of the foil.
